BBD 12T - Pneumatic Rock Drill

The BBD 12T is Atlas Copco's T-handled pneumatic rock drill, built specifically for vertical-down drilling rather than the horizontal work the D-handled BBD 12D or DS is designed for. It's a fit for contractors and quarry teams drilling plug holes, anchor holes, and shallow blast holes straight down, where a T-handle gives better control and grip than a D-handle would in that position.

Weighing 11.1 kg, the BBD 12T is slightly heavier than the BBD 12D, reflecting the different handle design and reinforcement needed for vertical use. It runs at roughly 24 l/s air consumption with an impact rate of about 2,580 blows per minute and a 220 rpm rotation.

Its penetration rate is suited for shallow-to-medium-depth holes rather than long blast holes. Like the rest of the BBD range, it uses a kick-latch retainer for quick drill steel changes and built-in air flushing to keep the hole clear while drilling.

Key Features of BBD 12T Pneumatic Sinker Drill (8311010295)

The BBD 12T is available in a single shank size — Hex 22 x 108 mm, which simplifies the ordering decision compared to models offered in two shank options.

RMT supplies the BBD 12T both as the original Atlas Copco tool and as the RMT 12T, a manufactured aftermarket equivalent built with the same shank specification, giving buyers a straightforward choice between OEM sourcing or a lower-cost alternative.

The BBD 12T (8311 0102 95) can go 3 metres deep and make a hole of diameter 24 to 34 mm. This is comparatively higher than the BBD 12D and BBD 12DS.

How to Decide Between BBD 12T (8311010295) and BBD 12D (8311010296)

Both drills are from the lightweight pneumatic drill range of Atlas Copco. Weight is not the decisive factor between the two. The major decision factor is the handle design.

The BBD 12T comes with a T-handle backhead. It is best suited for downward drilling, where you can hold both handles and use your body force for downward drilling. But if you want to use it for horizontal drilling, you may face difficulty in getting a proper grip.

Whereas, the D-handle of the BBD 12D gives you the advantage to pick it up like a rifle and use it for horizontal drilling. If you want to use the BBD 12D for vertical downward drilling, then due to the type of the handle, you will not be able to give sufficient downward force from your body.

Silenced Version of BBD 12T (TS - 8311010298)

The BBD 12T model (8311 0102 95) does not come with a silencer. However, if your mining project needs reduced sound from the drilling machine, then you can select the model BBD 12TS (8311 0102 98).

It is the same as the BBD 12T but is equipped with a polyethylene silencer, which reduces the sound level of the drill by 50%.

Latin American countries like Peru, Colombia, Brazil, and Mexico prefer BBD 12T (without silencer), whereas many mines and projects in countries like the USA, the UK, and countries in Europe have standardised regulations to use drills and machines with silencers. Thus, the alternative option for the BBD 12T is BBD 12TS.
